It is a good idea to keep the expenses down by asking your Gas Safe Engineer to price a service and gas safety certificate cost. These can be done on the same day. Some companies will charge for extra appliances to be checked too. Make sure you check that your boiler is not electric as this is not regulated under Gas Safe.  Both of these are annual requirements. A service is not required by law, but if you are a landlord the gas safety certificate is.
