 Replacement Boilers-Replacement Boiler-Boilers Replacement-Replacing Boilers-Replace Boiler

Ask Dave has received a letter in from Mr Taylor asking how long does it take to replace a boiler?

If it is anything like my Boiler at home, it broke down at 10 pm on a Friday Night!
I am a Worcester Accredited Heating Engineer so I favour the Worcester Bosch Brand. Boiler replacement or getting a new boiler is one of those purchases that you make only every 10 to 15 years, so getting the right replacement is paramount to a warm and happy home. New boiler costs vary significantly depending on the model and type of boiler that you require.

Time to enjoy a new boiler

You know when you need a boiler replacement:-
Your heating bills are suddenly more expensive, with no explanation.
Frequent issues require you to have it serviced more than once a year.
Your boiler and radiators are making unusual noises.
Your boiler smells sulphurous when it’s on.
Your boiler leaks.
Replacement parts are expensive and hard to find.
If you’re experiencing any of these major issues, it may be time to say out with the old, and in with a new boiler.

What is the most important part of a boiler?
The safety valve is the most important safety device in a boiler or domestic hot-water system. It is designed to relieve internal pressure if a range of failures occur within the system.

How do I find the age of my boiler?
You can find out how old your boiler is by visiting the official industry database.
Fill in details of your boiler and the dates when manufacture of that model began and ended will be displayed. You can search for all brands and models of boilers in this database. Or you can look at your boiler's serial number.

How do you tell if your boiler is a combi?
The first and most obvious way to tell is the current layout of your central heating system. If your home only has a boiler installed but does not have a loft tank and hot water cylinder installed, your current boiler is a combination boiler.
What is boiler pressure?
Boiler pressure refers to the pressure of hot water running in your sealed central heating system, while water pressure is the pressure of the water coming through your taps. ... Primarily, if you have low boiler pressure your system could cut out, preventing your central heating from working.

What are the main parts of a boiler?
The key elements of a boiler include the burner, combustion chamber, heat exchanger, exhaust stack, and controls. Boiler accessories including the flue gas economizer are also commonly used as an effective method to recover heat from a boiler.
What is inside a boiler?
The boiler is the most important part of a central heating system. ... A valve opens, gas enters a sealed combustion chamber in the boiler through lots of small jets, and an electric ignition system sets them alight. The gas jets play onto a heat exchanger connected to a pipe carrying cold water.

What does a burner do in a boiler?
The burner is the key equipment component for combustion control systems, providing the heat required for a boiler to convert water into steam.

When should I replace my boiler?
How to tell if my boiler needs replacing Frequent breakdowns.
Your bills are creeping up without explanation.
Your boiler or radiators are noisy.
The blue flame is now yellow.

How old is my Greenstar boiler?
When you find the serial number, go to the 4th and 5th number of the serial code and this will be the year the boiler was manufactured - pictured below for reference. So, the 4th and 5th numbers are 0 and 6 which means this boiler was manufactured in 2006.

How efficient is my boiler?
Any boilers manufactured today are going to be in the high 80s or low 90s, which are very efficient boilers. ... Anything below 70% efficient is G rated, and the rating goes up from there in 4% increments, with 82-86 being a C, 86-90 being a B and 90+ being A rated.

What is the alternative to a combi boiler?
Hybrid heating systems combine your gas boiler with a heat pump. This means you can make the switch to heat pumps without having to replace your boiler. A recent government report shows that a hybrid air source heat pump can reduce your boiler usage by up to 80%.

What should boiler pressure be when heating is on?
You should always check the system's pressure when the boiler is on. When the heating is off, the pressure will likely show as between 0.5 and 1 bar. When the heating is on, it should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. What is the process of boiler? A boiler incorporates a firebox or furnace to burn the fuel and generate heat. The generated heat is transferred to water to make steam, the process of boiling. This produces saturated steam at a rate which can vary according to the pressure above the boiling water.

Does bleeding a radiator reduce boiler pressure?
If you bled your radiators recently, you may have lost some pressure. That is because, when you bleed a radiator, air is released, which lowers the pressure in your boiler system.

Why is blowdown provided in a boiler?
Boiler blowdown is the removal of water from a boiler. Its purpose is to control boiler water parameters within prescribed limits to minimize scale, corrosion, carryover, and other specific problems. Blowdown is also used to remove suspended solids present in the system.

How does hot water boiler work?
In steam heating systems, a boiler furnace heats water by means of a gas or oil-fired burner and turns it into steam. The steam travels through pipes to radiators or convectors, which give off heat and warm the room. As the steam cools, it condenses back into water, and returns to the boiler to be heated again.

What is boiler capacity?
Since the amount of steam delivered varies with temperature and pressure, a common expression of the boiler capacity is the heat transferred over time expressed as British Thermal Units per hour. A boilers capacity is usually expressed as kBtu/hour (1000 Btu/hour) and can be calculated as. W = (hg - hf) m (1)

What is TDS in boiler water?
When a boiler generates steam impurities in the feed water will concentrate in the boiler water.
The concentration of impurities is often termed TDS - Total Dissolved Solids (ppm) and can be measured using a conductivity or density method.

Dave explains to Mr Taylor that depending on what type of boiler he buys, usually the installation is done in a day.
